Case study
We built what two dev teams wouldn't touch and two leading platforms couldn't deliver — and the client never lost a day of revenue in the process.
Two development teams turned down the project as too complex. Two top-ranked platforms on the market lacked the required features and had no roadmap to build them. Atherton Hill spent one month in discovery proving it could be done, then delivered a fully operational system in nine months with zero transition downtime.
$0
Revenue lost during transition (vs. ~$100K in prior platform migrations)
2x
Listing speed — directly translates to doubled revenue capacity
4 mins
Inventory reports — down from 6 hours
Day 1
Fully operational from launch — no ramp-up period
"I really didn't think you would pull this off! Nine months later, here we are. It's working. We have, as far as I know, the fastest pre-scanner on the market." —Founder, book reselling operation (3 weeks post launch)
The engagement
What we inherited
A business running on legacy software that couldn't scale. Every previous platform migration had cost the client roughly $100K in lost revenue — weeks of downtime meant inventory sat unlisted and unsold.
What we were asked to build
A platform capable of handling the full complexity of multi-channel book reselling: custom pricing rules, pre-scan logic, multi-marketplace sync, and inventory management — designed around how the operation actually runs.
What the market couldn't provide
Two development teams declined the project outright — the scope was too complex. Two top-ranked competitors already in the market lacked the required features and had no roadmap to get there. Off-the-shelf wasn't an option. Neither was finding someone else to build it.
How we got it done
Before the client committed a dollar to development, we spent one month in discovery building a working proof of the hardest feature — the rules engine. They saw it work. We built the rest in nine months. The platform went live on Day 1 with no gaps.
* All metrics reported by the client at 3 weeks post-MVP launch. Additional performance data expected at the 6-month mark.
